If you were to imagine a summer camp job, you might think of sunny skies, swimming in the lake, crazy all-camp games, and story-telling around the camp fire.
While each of those things is a part of the experience, there is plenty more in store for you as a counselor at Camp Champions.
You will have the opportunity to build leadership and problem solving skills while also having the responsibility of creating an environment for kids to build confidence and independence.
A day in the life is busy and full of variety. From the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep, counselors play a pivotal role in making everyday exciting and memorable for the campers.
Mornings at camp start quickly because there is so much to get done in a day!
You’ll begin by getting the cabin up and heading to Flag Raising (boys side) or Round Up (girls side).
Next up is breakfast in the Fillin’ Station! This is where everyone will fuel up for the day ahead. As a counselor, meals are the perfect time to connect with campers and get them excited for activities!
Each camper typically participates in five activity periods throughout the day, which means there is always something happening and plenty of opportunities to try new things.
During the day, counselors may take on different roles depending on their position each session. “Activity Counselors” facilitate the activity areas, while “Cabin Leaders” stay with their cabin throughout each activity and are able to participate with the kids.
Camp Champions organizes activities into five main departments: Waterfront, Outdoors, Ropes, Sports, and Fine Arts. This means a single day could include anything from kayaking or wakeboarding on Lake LBJ, to climbing a ropes course, playing sports, or participating in creative activities like art or media.
With more than forty different activities available, campers constantly have the chance to try something new.
Every activity provides an opportunity to encourage campers, help them step stretch their comfort zone, and to celebrate their progress and wins.
Counselors also rely heavily on one another. Camp Champions hires staff from across the United States and around the world, which creates a diverse and supportive community.
Throughout the day, counselors collaborate, solve problems together, and support one another to ensure every day at camp is as fun as possible.
Every night at camp features a different special event.
These include big group games, themed activities, and weekly dances. Special events give campers and counselors a chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy the community that forms over the course of the summer.
Each night ends with a special tradition called Torchlight, where campers gather together for singing, skits, and recognition of a camper of the day. It’s a fun and meaningful way to wrap up the day.
By the time counselors head back to their cabins at night, they are usually exhausted but in the best way possible. The day may have been long, but it was also full of laughter, growth, and memorable moments.
Working at Camp Champions is more than just a job for the summer. It’s an opportunity to build leadership skills, develop lifelong friendships, and make a real impact on the campers.
And while every day at camp looks a little different, one thing is always consistent:
It’s an experience that counselors and campers remember long after the summer ends.
